Mdantsane --- Laying the Foundation
1/15/2004

Mdantsane, South Africa is the second largest Township in South Africa. The church location is a 40 minute drive from East London, South Africa. Mdantsane is pronounced Don-sone-ne.

This is the original Maranatha church which we are here to replace. The roof leaks, the sides are tough cardboard with many holes --- no electricity and the overall condition is extremely poor.

Mitch Olsen of St. Paul, Minnesota discusses the concrete footing project with Pastor Nyaba and Pastor Maxwell. This area of South Africa speaks the Xhosa language --- pronounced Kosa.

Our project begins as we dig the footings around the existing building.

Trenches are constructed straight and narrow so wood is not necessary to shore up the sides.

Duane Demaris from Hibbing, Minnesota is our team construction leader this year. Here he is insuring the concrete is placed properly.

Glen Huff from New Hope, Minnesota insures the concrete pour is centered.

At the end of the day the trenches were filled with concrete and ready to set.

Stepped footings to accommodate an elevation change proved to be a formidable challenge that Duane Demaris and crew completed skillfully.

The last day we worked on the footings ran late. Duane Demaris was scheduled to preach and he did so by candle light. It was his fist sermon ever including his testimony.

At the end of his sermon everyone came forward for prayer. It was a blessed and tearful good by.
